Sustainability Charter

The City’s Sustainability Charter was initiated in 2007 by City Council and developed in association with the Tla’amin First Nation, Powell River Regional District, School District 47, Vancouver Island University, and many local citizens and volunteer organizations.  A community forum was held in 2008 with approximately 300 community members in attendance and hosted by a group of expert panelists involved in the sustainability movement that was taking place across the country.  Working groups were established to set out specific social, environmental and economic aspects of sustainability, as well as the development of a community vision statement.  The Charter is a product of these efforts that sets out clear goals and direction of our intention to become more sustainable and recognizes the diverse values of all members of our society.  The Charter’s vision and direction can be achieved by working cooperatively together and will require commitment and support of government, engaged citizens and all agencies within our community.
